Flashback: David Lee Roth Dons “Jesus Ensemble” For Joan Rivers

From RollingStone.com:

This week, long-running rumors that Guitar Hero: Van Halen would be coming to your nearest GameStop were confirmed when Activision announced the title will be ready before year’s end. So, for this week’s Flashback, in honor of this momentous gaming news, we bring you the sometimes-inebriated, but always-hilarious David Lee Roth. Which Dave showed up for an appearance on The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers on October 10, 1986? We’re actually not sure… you decide.

(We can’t embed the clip, but it’s on Youtube here, and it’s worth it.)

The clip (obviously filmed before an adoring audience) is classic Roth, from start to finish. Taped the night before his “hot date with 20,000 of my closest friends at the Meadowlands” on the occasion of his 31st birthday, Roth, donning white gloves, black spandex emblazoned with pink, white, and blue mystery symbols, and cowboy boots (what he refers to as his Jesus Ensemble, because whenever he puts it on, “everyone says, ‘Oh, Jesus’ “), gets down with Rivers, and the two talk touring, babes, and life after Van Halen; at one point, she brings up the growing feud between Roth and his former band, to which Roth responds, “Fellas, you keep on raining, and I’ll still be the parade.”

At first, you won’t even recognize Joan, because its pre-plastic surgery Joan, not Celebrity Apprentice Joan. She’s svelte, has huge ’80s hair, and actually looks… dare we say it… hot in her bedazzled sweater. The video also includes a rare appearance from the Fabulous Picasso Brothers, and we learn something I bet none of you knew: Dave knows how to say “Happy Birthday” in Spanish.

Bonus Flashback: A grainy yet titillating interview with Roth from a local news affiliate, shot way the hell back in 1981. Pay particularly close attention to Dave’s surroundings. That’s the basement of his house, where Van Halen used to practice back in those days. Oh, and expect pearl upon profound pearl of wisdom from DLR. Example: “Success is what you give yourself; fame is what other people give you.”

That´s why Dave is the man!! The RIGHT MAN for the Job! He is unique, original!!

He is not the better singer, even a best musician, but he got the soul, the spirit, the attitude, the energy, the philosofy, the life style…

David lee Roth is the face and the attitude of Van Halen.

    God Bless you Dave!!

    God Save Van Halen!!

I am obliged to say the following:

But this isn’t Van Halen news… It’s solo Dave news. There shouldn’t be any solo Dave news here on VHND.

  • pete

  • JoJo

I love Dave and love this interview, I saw it live and still have it on vhs. But one thing that’s always bothered me about it is he said “Happy Anniversay”, in spanish. Happy Birthday is Feliz Cumpleanos.

How many sound bytes can dave put in in a 3 min clip….jez he was the man…..how many rock stars can sound cool using the word….”incongruity”? Only one. “how artistic can you be in a place where they sell popcorn and juju’s?”

I bet reporters WISH they could find a guy like Dave now days. Everyone is so artistic and serious. Dave knew what rock and roll was all about. WHERE ARE THE REAL ROCK STARS TODAY?

  • DANNY BOY

Man what a different time, what a god damn attitude..
You will never see shit like that again-ever.
That is what we have to take along with us, anything new or even new Van Halen will never be so powerful, but sure hope it will have some truth behind it.

  • brian

The only person who is even close to that -fuck you- attitude today as far as I know is Axl.

He’s still got that fuck you attitude. But Axl is too serious and nobody is Dave. Plus Axl is certifiably insane. lol
Dave is one of a kind.
It’s no wonder VH has tried so hard to make it work with him.

It’s about damn time there is some Roth/VH news on this VHnd?? rather than some Chickenshit news, err my bad, pollo footo or whatever those castaways on Roy’s Island call themselves. . .
“Sammy Hager would sell the naming rights to his butthole if he could. . Davod Lee Roth DLR Show

  • Vanicionado

Actually watching these vids brought me way back…

Dave was on top of the world.

Let’s hope he’ll be sitting there again soon!

  • http://www.501st.com Skutch

    That would be awesome bro!

  • Fan of GREAT music

Old news but still great news! I miss the old DLR band with Steve Vai and the bunch! That first record ROCKED!! Hope that Dave with VH can bring it in the next year!!

  • Gee Lopz

When i say David Lee Roth is the face and the attitude of Van Halen, i mean that Dave put the “color” on the Van Halen music.

I love Eddie, he is my King, but the band without Dave´s sense of humor and energy is a “gray” band, no happiness. With Hagar is a good band. But is not a Classic Van Halen spirit and atittude. Too serious. Sometimes boring…The same (worst) with Cherone or another singer.

And Eddie finally wake and realize that!!

Eddie and Alex are great guys, great musicians, but to be a real BIG band, besides the talent you got to have charisma. More than a singer and frontman: a showman!!

David Lee Roth = Charisma. He is like Jagger, Ozzy, Mercury…

    Unique. Original. Rockstar.

    Like it or not.

  • pete

dave roth really never did anything for me but im really not into the “frontman” thing.no singer is worth anything without a great guitar player at his side.
