It's like comparing apples to oranges but we must all be thankful that #1. that Ed and Dave co-exist at all, #2. we're getting to hear the old classics live again and #3.there's new VH music on the horizon.-Cheers

Both versions cook, it's Van Halen. I prefer the tempo of the newer version, it shows the maturity gained through the years. Dave is pretty close to the old days. Let's not forget there would have been a time a few years ago where he would not have been able to pull that off. He gets his chops back all things considering... and no forgotten words.

I was at their last show in Quebec City in 2009 and I was standing int the front row and it was awesome. Keep it comin' boys, can't wait for some new material.

I saw VH twice on the new tour and thought they kicked ass. I am too young to have seen them live back in the day, but I've seen a good amount of youtube and have a tape of the US Festival.
That being said, I am so perplexed as to the critics of this most recent tour. I have nothing against Michael Anthony, but I honestly thought Wolf was superior in every way. I can tell you that watching the tape of the US Festival, MA's solo absolutely sucks the life out of the show. I agree that he was for many years underrated(in addition to seeming like the only normal human being in this band), but it seems like part of VH's fanbase has gone way overboard with this "Michael Anthony was crucial" sentiment. According to Anthony, hadn't Ed had been playing bass (dubbed in) on some of the albums for quite a while...how come all these fans weren't suspecting this if he's so critical?
I also cannot understand people who say DLR has "lost his voice". If anything, I thought his singing was tremendously improved. While his showmanship and general "entertainment value" is off the charts in the old shows, he actually sang the lyrics and seemed like he was paying attention, not to mention his energy and athleticism would be in the top .001% of all 53 year olds (or whatever he is) in '07. I thought his voice was much better and wondered if he took singing lessons! I missed the banshee screams, but he far exceeded my expectations and kicked ass beyond belief.
I am not a guitar or drum player and cannot critique Ed or Al's technical skill, but they were both in incredible shape and I thought they kicked ass. If this was disappointing, what in God's name were your expectations?
While it is disappointing that VH seems to have no sense of urgency on recording new music, I had absolutely no disappointment in their live performance. They clearly worked very hard to get in impressive physical and musical shape. This tour exceeded my wildest expectations of 3 50+ year old men and a 16 year old playing old music on a new tour. Much respect to other or differing opinions, but when I read some of this stuff about how bad or disappointing this tour was, I say to myself that there is no way we were watching the same thing. Maybe it was because of this being the first time I saw them, and yes I would slightly take the 83 version over the current version, but all VH fans should be happy that it's a tough call...

I saw 2 shows in 07-08, both were very good. I did however notice how predictable the general sound and setlist were(way too organized for the mighty VH)LOL
Having said that, 3 years ago we would have all killed to see Mean Street played with David Lee Roth in the now.Any critic of the "new Van Halen" obviously has no respect for the original.
The magic of this band was hindered for roughly 23 years, and both vocal, and playing techniques have evolved and changed.I cant think of any other band that can mirror the past from 83 to 2008?I like how the band looks, and im really glad that they didnt go the cheesey route with old stage lights, and props, and hair.LOL
Also, that is one of the best live performances in 83 that ive ever heard! Alot of these old shows are brimming with drunkenness, lost ques and, poor timing. The "new" Van Halen is here, and its 75% of what we wanted.Wolfgang does great, but the most notable difference in the new performance is the lacking of Mad Anthony's back up vocals(it wasnt all Dave).
