Rare video - Eddie at NAMM, 1987

Monday, 16 March 2009

Here’s some little-seen footage of Eddie Van Halen playing at the Anaheim Convention Center during the NAMM show, January 30th, 1987. He’s jamming with Steve Stevens, Michael Winslow, and others at the Kramer booth. This was just two months after the 5150 tour wrapped up, and just before he went into the studio to play bass on Sammy’s I Never Said Goodbye album.

Songs: “Superstitious” & “Whole Lotta Love.”

  2. Michael says:

Very cool. And kinda sad, cos I just can’t see Eddie doing this sort of thing today.

(surprised he didn’t sack himself from the band for playing with other people….)

  3. Big Al says:

    edrulez,

I AGREE! He was trying to pick a fight. Like ED says, music is not a competition!

Plus when EVERY GUITARIST that comes after you, sounds EXACTLY like you, Well you have NOTHING to prove!!

ALL HAIL KING EDWARD!! especially those who TEACH!!!!

  4. Big Al says:

    Michael,

You’re aloud to JAM with other people, not START NEW BANDS!!!

    get it RIGHT!!

  5. Erick says:

EVH, Steve Stevens, the guy with all the sounds in Police Academy. I would call this another SUPERGROUP.

  6. Jor-L5150 says:

man - there ia ALWAYS something ” new ” to see/hear.

just when i thought i knew of every bootleg/clip etc.

  7. billy says:

The backwoods of Appalachia called, they want their rat tail haircut back.

Jesus Christ. Ed looks like a carnival ride operator.

That was a great time, though. Ed was happy and healthy and Sam hadn’t discovered fried cheese cake bites and Hawaiian shirts just yet.

  8. JCN says:

I don’t think Steve Stevens was trying to start a fight.

Whats he supposed to do just fall over and play dead cuz it’s Eddie next to him. Hell no.

  9. JoePhishVH says:

Great clip, new to even us VH vets that thought we’d seen em all, keep em comin!!!! Stevens wasn’t pickin a fight, a friendy duel maybe, its part of the all star jam thing, its cool no biggie, they were all havin fun, crowd dug it, leave it be. Nice Tim Bogert of Vanilla Fudge on vocals in the first clip, classic, great to see the ‘old’ Ed rockin out and having fun, wish we can see that again dunno if its possible….cheers!!!

  10. skutch says:

That mullet is terrible. Great playing though.

  11. Dave says:

Ed was awesome during the cocaine years. Played good, looked fit, and jumped around a lot. What happened?

  12. bigfoot1141 says:

Really cool to see some bootleg stuff!

I don’t think Steve was starting a fight, he had said many times before that Eddie was a big influence on him. I think he was just showing Eddie all he had learned from him.

One thing that was dissappointing was to hear hear Eddie jamming the same solo licks he did at every other jam. He really got stuck in a rut around that time, solo wise. Not that it was bad, but “been there, hear it too many times”.

It did prove once and for all that Eddie is an AWSOME rhythm player. He is WAY TO UNDERRATED in that department!

  13. Bran Halen says:

Very cool! Please keep this stuff coming!

  14. ER says:

Great time era for Eddie! Thanks for posting!

  15. J5149.5 says:

steve’s trying to push eddie.that’s all.eddie got real laid back at this time and was more into songwriting than soloing. and if you notice he just rips right here as good as he had ever did.

  16. Steve says:

It was an amazing evening that I will never forget. I was there as a photographer and got many amazing shots. This was also the same day that Steve Stevens recorded the Dirty Diana video with Michael Jackson. This brought back a lot of good memories of those days…Thanks for posting.
