“Van Halen” by Nerf Herder
A lot of VH fans already know about this, but for the thousands of our readers that don’t…
Nerf Herder is a pop punk band from Santa Barbara formed in 1994. One of the things they are most known for is their 1996 single “Van Halen”, a parody tribute to the our favorite band, which attracted significant radio airplay and led to their first major record deal.
Nerf Herder’s “Van Halen” lyrics:
I bought Van Halen I
It was the best damn record I ever owned
TG&Y 1978
Two hand tapping guitar technique really got me off
Eruption yeah, ain’t talkin’ ’bout love, I’m on fire
Tomorrow may come
Tomorrow may never come again
Can’t you hear Jamie cryin?
She’s runnin’ with the devil
I bought Women and Children First
Fair Warning and Van Halen II
Dance the night away
1984 my favorite record yeah I wore it down
Might as well jump
Tomorrow may come
Tomorrow may never come again
Can’t you hear Jamie cryin?
She’s runnin’ with the devil
Is this what you wanted, Sammy Hagar?
Sammy Hagar, is this what you wanted, man?
Dave lost his hairline but you lost your cool buddy
Can’t drive 55
I’ll never buy your lousy records again
Again, again, again, never again…
Tomorrow may come
Tomorrow may never come again
Can’t you hear Jamie cryin?
She’s runnin’ with the devil
Jump jump jump jump jump jump jump, might as well jump

Wondering, since he can’t drive 55 and never buying Hagar’s stuff, what’s up with the ‘Balance’ shirt?

Now we get an article about something that happened 13 years ago. Great. I remember when that came out. My best friend at the time called me up “Dude, there is a new song about Van Halen, it’s really funny.” I bought the CD the next day. That whole CD is really good. Funny stuff.

Its been pointed out before, but I love how the kid who if flipping out during the Hagar era has a “Balance” shirt on.

I know this the wrong time to say this but what happened to Vitto Bratta? He was insanely good. I guess Eddie laid it to tape first as they say?!1

Why wasn’t he wearing the lion-shirt?

Here we go…all the couch-frustrated-guitarist-critics coming to the rescue

The guy that directed the video didn’t know shit from apple sauce, and the group didn’t have enough clout to insist on changes — that’s my guess.
Boy, you know you’re in trouble when people in the music community are basically calling for a boycott of your tunes. That has to hurt business because a lot of kids probably liked this group and will never buy a Van Halen record because of it, though I agree with sentiment and gave away my Van Hagar CDs 10 years ago.

i like both roth and hagar. this poorly done song insults them and van halen. hey dude i got an idea lets make a song and use all of van halens songs as lyrics. and we will let some ass that can’t sing sing it. doubt nerf herder will ever be in the rock n roll hall of fame. and for all you hagar haters out there, who showed up to accept the award. i would be willing to bet all of you that hate him also bought all of the records with him.

wow, man this is some shitty song. and the sammy hagar era is my fav era of that band. its eddies songwriting that got better in those days.

Hey I thought the video was humorous and I always enjoy raw simple three piece sound (drums, bass, 1 guitar). I think you’d hard pressed to find a Van Halen era that wasn’t good. I mean it. Even with Gary Cherone. That certainly wasn’t what we expected but it wasn’t bad. Hagar was different from Roth but he was still an awesome vocalist. Nothing will ever compare to those first years of VH with Dave unless they suprise us again my friends. They’re saying there’s new music coming. I’m looking forward to it. !!AND!! I want all the members of Van Halen, Ed Al Mike Dave Sam Gary and Wolfie, to know I think you guys are the greatest and I appreciate the good music you’ve given us over the years. May God help you all in the struggles of life and again, thank you for the good music.
Your fan in Iowa,
Lance Okones

Also, since this wasn’t really a message board about Van Halen but rather about ‘Nerf Herder’, I thought the song was alright. I got a kick out of it.
Rock on NH,

God I hate this song. It’s not even good as novelty. The only thing I think of when I hear it is how my sister used to tease me with this song when it came out. She used to say I’ll grow out of Van Halen and “listen to good music instead” (which to her at the time was bands like Weezer, Offspring, Better Than Ezra, Presidents of the United States, The Toadies and various other “cutting edge” artists **chuckle**). I probably don’t need to even tell you all, I never stopped listening to Van Halen.
February 14th, 2009 at 3:28 am
Yeh if they bought Van halen one it should have inspired them to play more interesting music this is lazy music no effort .
February 14th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
thanks for posting this video that i’ve been looking for a long time. i saw just once time but i now i realized the lyrics is just about the earlier VAN HALEN. All incarnation of the band is great and Sammy ruled when he was with Eddie, Alex and Mike. Long live Van Halen with a new album and a tour passing here in Brasil!!

Shite.

I’m sorry but this song is terrible.
Mundane. No skill in it at all. Poorly produced, even.
The ONLY thing that links it to Van Halen are the crap lyrics….
This band doesn’t even deserve to utter Van Halen, let alone claim influence from them….
Ed Van Halen went on a few rules when making music, one of them being ”if it sounds good, it is good”……this does not sound good….
Just thought i’d get it off my chest
Peace out

Nice balance shirt…
February 15th, 2009 at 1:53 am
This is a poser song, these kids may have heard Van Halen a song or two, but based on the lyrics they are bunch of guys just saying “Yeah Van Halen is a big influence to this band”, but yet they mock the band and it’s die-hard fans. May all they were listening was “Jump” and just rode along the hype. “1984″ is a great album, but I want to pick my fav album, it would be the first one or Fair Warning. They missed out the legacy and influence that Van Halen had on music, not the crap music that young people listen to these days. There is no emotion, no technicality, no real-good-rockin’ fun. And yeah, I bet the guitarist is frustrated that he can’t play VH riffs.

Read my post again…..they should call this band ” Nerd Herder ” because as far as i can tell they all come out to comment on this song
February 15th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
While I like the nod to Van Halen, this band sucks. They are craptastic musicians.
February 15th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
God I hate this song. It’s not even good as novelty.
February 15th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
This song is like 10 years old right? How is this news?
February 15th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
These guys suck, and so does their unfunny song. And they have a lot of nerve saying Sammy Hagar “lost his cool.” These guys never were cool in the first place. Freaking geeks.
February 15th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
looks like this site is getting more and more pro-dave era..
i love both eras to death and started listening around 1987 with 5150 which is a killer album..
look its “cool” to pick on van hagar and only people in the industry will quietly admitt they like sam (AiC, slash etc.) but so what sam has never been a fan of the critics and no one could replace dave but sam came close and they maybe made even some better tunes.. this alternative anti-poseur rock brings back bad memories of raves and the 90’s
bring on CHICKFOOT and real hard rock!!
no pussy alt. rock crap.
garbage song, funny video, the t-shirt shows the band is clueless.
February 16th, 2009 at 8:33 am
Yeah, couldn’t they have recognized that if the kid’s gonna lose all faith in the band and freak out once Sammy Hagar joins, that perhaps a Balance T-Shirt was a bad move?
OR… perhaps he gives Hagar a chance, and it takes him until Balance to figure it out??? That’s one stupid kid!
February 16th, 2009 at 9:30 am
man…you guys are like a formula….easy pickins.
