Eddie Van Halen promises more touring

Thursday, 5 February 2009

REUTERS/Robert PadgettFrom Reuters today:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Eddie Van Halen is still hot for David Lee Roth.

More than six months after the two former combatants wrapped a successful reunion tour at the helm of their faded rock band Van Halen, some new music and more touring could be in the offing.

Guitarist Van Halen told Rolling Stone he had “a lot of fun” on tour, that singer Roth was “a blast,” and he has written “tons of music” for what would be the band’s first album in more than a decade.

The rock veterans had been at war since Roth quit the band in 1985 to pursue a solo career, but they declared a ceasefire to kick off a 75-date tour in September 2007. Also along for the trek was Eddie’s drummer brother, Alex, and his teen-aged son, Wolfgang, substituting for Michael Anthony on bass.

“We are a band — it wasn’t just a one-off tour we did,” Van Halen told the magazine, adding that he planned to meet with Roth this summer to play him demos of new songs.

The band released its last album in 1998, “Van Halen III,” its first and only recording with singer Gary Cherone, who filled in for Roth’s replacement, Sammy Hagar. The album bombed, Cherone quickly exited, and the band foundered.

A spokeswoman for Roth declined to comment to Reuters on the article, and Van Halen’s publicist/fiancee Janie Liszewski, said she had no additional information.

  9. Myron T. Philpot says:

*yawn* Ed’s been saying he’s got tons of new music for how long now yet the last offering was over ten years ago and was mediocre at best. Look, I’ve loved EVH and co. since my first concert in 1984 but it’s my opinion they’ve run out of steam. But that’s OK; they should do what they do best and play their old material in concert. Forget trying to come up with new stuff that may or may not be a worthy addition to the VH canon and just wail on the proven classics. I’ll gladly see them again and again if I can be assured of a solid performance of favorites and maybe a few forgotten surprises. They shouldn’t try to keep pushing “new” when they’re old men (save Wolfie).

  10. Nat says:

Everybody talks about wanting new music, but even if they do actually release something, the stuff people are really going to a concert to hear are their favorite songs from 15, 20, 30 years ago.

The Who understand this and just play old stuff for the most part. The Rolling Stones make new music and nobody wants to hear it anyway.

  11. JOHN GARRETT says:

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR NEW VH– I HOPE ITS TRUE– I MISS MIKE TOO– BUT HE IS WITH CHICKENFOOT– I HOPE ED WANTS TO MAKE SOME MUSIC WITH HIS SON BEFORE HE KICKS THE BUCKET– WHAT A WASTE–

11 YEARS WITHOUT A NEW CD IS AN AWFUL LONG TIME– THE 3 TUNES ON BOBW ARE GREAT– BUT THAT WAS 5 YEARS AGO–

ED– YOU WILL SELL ALOT MORE GUITARS IF YOU GET YOURSELF BACK IN TEH SPOTLIGHT– HELL– JUST RELEASE A FEW AT A TIME ON I-TUNES–

DO SOMETHING– WE CAN’T WAIT TILL SUMMER FOR YOUTO ” DISCUSS ” NEW MUSIC– JUST FRIGGING DO IT–

YOU ARE TOO OLD TO WASTE TIME– AND WE ARE ALL GETTING OLDER TOO–

  12. Todd says:

VHND is absolutely the best. You guys should expand to cover the few remaining true rock bands. Keep up the great work.

  13. stew says:

hey john those songs on BOBW suCked ! The 2 new new ones Dave did were much better!

  14. pushtoshove says:

I say let them create and see what happens , we’ve already got one ‘rolling stones’. As far as Mr Roth is concerned I think it wise that he is sticking with his newfound career/passion for if the past has shown us anything it is that all bets are off until the facts are in.

  15. Joe Joynt says:

    Thank god!
Some clear, concise, non-ambiguous news about VH’s recording/touring future. Up until this, everything was “well, he(DLR)knows my number…”.

Get the FUCK in the recording studio and don’t put out SHIT like VH III. That one sucked so bad, I threw it out my window driving down the highway. Now there is ROTH, so it should be really good. Looking forward to it!!!!

Of course, I mean this in a positive, encouraging way…

PS Please don’t SCREW US(The fans!) on ticket prices!!
    Is it really necessary??

    with much love & respect,
    from Fall River,Massachusetts

  16. stephan chartier says:

    YOUR NUMBER 1 Fan

  17. ClubfootKolby says:

Bring back the best, bring back Sammy.

  18. Big Al says:

    Hi ClubfootKolby,

Sounds like someone has been listening to their Jimmy Buffet albums again! Come on, go get your Cabo and we’ll do a shot together! You drink to Sam and I’ll drink to ( all incarnations of)Van Halen!!

  19. Dave Bridge says:

10 years and still talking, still the promises………………….About time Ed stopped make excuses, grew up and DELIVERED. The balls in your court Ed!

  20. Dave Bridge says:

Either release some new music for the fans……remember them or retire

  21. Luther says:

I’ll believe it when I hear it..by the way, the VH brothers f#$ked Michael Anthony over just because he was playing with Sammy and they were picking their asses. Bring back Mike!

  22. Keith says:

All you fans that says DLR or Sammy are great and the other guy sucks are pathetic and clueless. Know your facts. Ed’s on record in uber numerous magazines and gushed more about Gary ( CHERONE & VHIII) than anybody. Would you tell that to him inperson if you met him ? I thought not. Don’t be such hipocrites. I’m sick of the old stuff. Move on. Bring on whatever strikes you Ed . In fact, I’d welcome a new singer.

  23. MAELSTROM says:

Great news in deed! So I figure this means it may be about a year or so before we hear any new music from the VH camp? Or will that be a year to wait for another announcement? Maybe a year or so to hear that they all decided that it wasn’t going to work out after all? Or maybe in a year or so after no news or announcements they will surprise us with a sudden release of a new album (titled VH IV or something like that)with a new front man that nobody has ever heard of and the album will totally suck and we will be thinking to ourselves “What the hell happened?”

    Remember the good old days?

    Van Halen released in 1978
Van Halen II released in 1979
Women and Children First released in 1980
    Fair Warning released in 1981
    Diver Down released in 1982
    1984 released in 1984

Whew, that was 6 albums in 7 years!

Since then, time has moved forward and technological advances have been made in recording and mass production.

Now I’m no music industry insider, but I think an group like Van Halen that wants to make music (especially as much as Eddie claims to want to) would find a way to get the job done in less than 10 years.

  24. Peedah says:

Van F*ckin Halen !!! Right Kris?!!!

  25. Kenny says:

why is everyone pushing so much for NEW music, I mean give it a rest will ya, if they make new music fine, if they don’t then that’s fine too!! Do you ppl think it’s easy making and creatng music? if so why don’t u put out a album, let’s see what u got.Ed has more talent in his pinky than most of you morons out there, so leave the guy alone. Hey Ed, do what u want LIFE YOUR LIFE the way you want too, and Enjoy yourself with your Family. Congrads on the new marriage. =) I hope u are doing well and takecare my Freind.

  26. ER says:

Despite the naysayers I think a new VH album in 2010 with Wolf and Roth is a sure bet. Eddie’s desire to create new music with his son will see to this, not to mention I’m sure the VH camp will want to “answer back” to this year’s Chickenfoot album.

The 2010 VH album is sure to outsell Chickenfoot based on name recognition, regardless of which album is actually better.

So which album will be better? Of course there’s no way to know until we have both of them, but considering the line-ups both albums have the potential to be fantastic! Nothing against Chad, but VH has the advantage in the Drums department. Nothing against Wolf, but CF has the advantage in the bass department. Love both the singers. And that brings us to Ed and Joe. Ed, of course, made a bigger contribution to rock guitar than Joe could ever dream about. But as far as the CURRENT state of things, to be honest, Ed has me a little worried. As far as I’m concerned he hasn’t delivered since 1996 - the last VH songs that I thought were truly great being Humans Being and Me Wise Magic. Joe, on the other hand, has been putting out album after album, about every other year, each one with great melodies and state of the art shredding. Nothing would make me happier than for both albums to be great, but if Ed is the driving creative force of VH, and I’m assuming Joe will be the creative force of CF, then my money is on CF being the better album, though it will sell less. I hope I’m wrong, though, and that we will get the best of both worlds with both bands. Cause I can tell you what it’s worth :)

  27. Mitch says:

Ok, that the final straw that is making me write this. . .
#1- I will not pay excissive ticket prices to see FAUX HALEN
#2- Where’s Mike (no offense wolfie) he actually cares about the fans
#3- If the recordings of the last tour are any sign I’d rather see a good van halen cover band. at least they can hit the notes
Ed i was your biggest fan and will always love to listen to “vh1″ up to “balance”. after that, you lost your way. I’m buying the joke you’re selling the public anymore!!!

  28. CHARVEL.ESP.ROCK.españa. says:

PLEASE. VAN HALEN TOUR EUROPE. GRACIAS.En Europa se les espera hace tiempo, haber si hay suerte.gracias,un SALUTE.LARGA VIDA AL ROCK AND ROCK.

  29. ClubfootKolby says:

Hey Big Al, Van Halen will probably open for Chickenfoot down at the Cabo Wabo.

  30. Matt from Australia says:

Hey Mitch get a life - if you’re gonna post something make sure its different from the last one!
