Easily one of the most recognizable rock songs based solely on the drum intro. Nice find; keep ‘em coming!
MA=VH

I can hear guitar faintly in the background, would that be because of how you isolated the drums, or is it something picked up on the drum track from a mic?
Thanks for posting these, really neat to listen to… should make for fun times noodling on my own.

Good Lord! I think I just……….Absolutely by far the best rock drum song ever created by man, and to hear it isolated made it that much better! Carry on then with them all! Viva Van Halen!!!!!!!

Someone just ripped these from the new Guitar Hero game, thats why you can hear the other instruments.
Side note, makes me wonder if they removed Mikeys bass from this song on Guitar Hero and replaced it with Wolfie…kinda like what Ozzy did to his ex bass players on his last box set.

Actually Bill, it’s most likely a room mic in the drum room. It’s probably still picking up a little bleed.

In 5150 where 1984 was recorded, isn’t al’s drum room seperate from everyone else? Why would it be picking up eds guitar?
December 7th, 2008 at 4:03 am
I thought the seperate drum room was built just prior to the recording of the F.U.C.K album when Eddie renovated the studio.

Killer inspiration. Keep the snippets coming.
December 7th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Holy @$@$@!
December 7th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Yeah, Al’s kit was in a different room from the guitar, but when you record guitar it is turned up as loud as it can go (or until it starts to sound crappy.) In a small room with an amp turned up to 11, you can’t believe how (wonderfully)loud it can be. It’s basically loud enough to still be slightly heard in the drum room, especially by the high quality mics that are being used. That’s most likely what it is.

HEY HERE IS AN IDEA HOW ABOUT WE USE THE VAN HALEN NEWS DESK FOR NEWS ABOUT VAN HALEN. THIS IS NOT YOUTUBE!!!!
December 7th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
I would agree with nick but there likely isn’t much news out there

Its rare to meet someone as gracious, much less talented, as Mike Anthony. I had the priveledge of meeting him in the bands early days. He was kind and took the time to acknowledge a fan who was in awe to be in the company of such a killer act. It was a true shame that Mike was excluded from the “reunion”. His vocals and playing were essential to a true Van Halen show.I wish Edward would grow-up. He forgets that a band is the sum total of it’s parts. I wish we could have been treated to a REAL reunion. Michael, I wish you the best of luck with your new project. Ed, you screwed us all.

Love this track, but something sounds a little off when more drums come in…around 0:09, if I remember correctly.
December 8th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
alex is the shit, thats why i named my son after him.
December 9th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
I agree with nick - this website needs to change its name, because for the last six months there has been no real news!

The TRUE definition of a shuffle. Alex Van Halen puts the swing in Rock And Roll and outshines his more “technical” drumming colleagues with a feel and groove that gives the music life. I’d love to hear the raw track from “Pleasure Dome” off of F. U. C. K. I’m surprised that Alex’s display of coordination and control on that tune hasn’t made more of a buzz in the music community. Anyway, I hope we hear some news from the band soon!

exactly what I wanted for Christmas…i’ve been searching all over the web to get some quality backing tracks of all my favorite VH songs.
Please post the rest of “1984″ and “Fair Warning”….PLEASE!!
December 12th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
why did Gary leave the band? He could sing three different generes of VH?

Alex the Best Drumer.

Although the technique may have been ahead of its time…. its truly not that incredible. first off…. the intro is nothing more than layered drum tracks. also i would like to ad, if you play the drums you would know that playing double bass is a mere cheap trick. a cheat if you will. there are drummers that have far more superiority as far as independence is concerned for each limb of there body. i mean… even on a major label release you hear many flaws on that recording.
to put it in simplest terms…. there are drummers out there that can do that (hot for the teacher) and more with only a single pedal. i do have to say though… it has never been alex van halen to boast about his skills. its always been the lack minded fan. alex van halen is probably one of the most humble drummers in the industry.
