Sammy Hagar 1977 concert - listen here!
Thanks to the Wolfgang’s Vault website, we get to hear Sammy Hagar, live at Winterland (San Francisco, CA. 11/19/1977) as one of their featured concerts!
This show, recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, is a classic solo performance. It’s a MUST-LISTEN for Sammy fans, as it is so very different from the vibe of the Sammy Hagar concerts that most fans are familiar with! This is before the tequila, before the Cantina, before Cabo, before Van Halen, and even before his Geffen Records hits in the early 80’s.
This is back when Sammy was still fresh out of Montrose. He had just released Nine On A Ten Scale in 1976, and The Red Album and Musical Chairs earlier that year, in 1977.
It’s old-school rock, with a trippy SPACE ODYSSEY thrown in!
Sammy Hagar - vocals
Bill Church - bass
Alan Fitzgerald - keyboards
Gary Pihl - guitar
Denny Carmassi - drums
Click on the link above to listen to the entire concert. (NOTE: You will have to create an account to hear it. An account is free and you only requires you to give them your name & email address. This is the only Sammy Hagar concert that Wolfgang’s Vault has, and unfortunately, they don’t have any Van Halen concerts).

Of course, listening to the concert requires you to register, submit two forms of ID, a credit card, and a DNA sample…sloppy, guys. Why can’t you just give us the link without all the brewhaha?

I wish the VHND would drop the Sammy stuff and let us get on with our healing.

Disregard the anti-Sammy comment. Van Halen fans can love both Sammy and Roth because they are so different and gave us the soundtrack of our lives.
I, for one, prefer Sammy because he performs at a higher level live, writes better songs, has a better voice and we can see he really CARES about audience. DLR on the other hand, I respect what he did in the 70’s and 80’s, but his Vegas-style act and his out-of-breath vocal technique are dated and will have a finite existence in today’s market. Will Van Halen ever be relevant again? Not with Roth at the helm.
Oh, and, they grossed the most $$$ ever for a VH tour because they charged each venue $2 million, no matter the seating capacity. Don’t think this revenue record is because ROTH is amazing or anything, please….they simply charged more.

Thanks,Rock on

I love Sammy and I love Gary. I can do without Roth all together. Thank you VHND for being superb and giving us the best of all the members of Van Halen. THAT is what Van Halen is about. Embracing the history. Even when the current members do not.
Thanks VHND! I am going to go listen to this concert now!!!

Cabo Joe please get your facts straight. Roth outsold the Sammy era almost two to one. Look it up!! Sammy wrote better songs?? I guess that is all who you ask.. Ain’t talking bout Love or Poundcake? Bottoms Up or Love Walks In? Unchained or When its Love? Sammy performs at a higher level? Last time I saw Sam he sat on his ass for half the show signing T-shirts or whatever junk people would throw on stage. The guy walked into a perfect situation at the right time when Ed went through his pop stage and Hagar was more than happy to go along with it. Sammy had only one platnum solo album (VOA) so he saw it as the perfect opportunity that was set up by Dave. Keep in mind 1984 sold 10 million plus and the only reason it didn’t hit number one was because of one the biggest selling albums of all time Thriller. Again, it is all depending on what type of music you liked. Bottom line is Sammy will always have to perform songs from the DLR era where as Dave never will and doesn’t have to.

Cabo Joe, I agree. I can’t believe we are celebrating the “Highest grossing tour in band history”. We should be pissed. We are paying for it. I wouldn’t mind so much if the highest grossing tour was during the popular years when the band made albums and was selling records but there hasn’t been a record with more than two or three original songs since I can remember . . . think about it.

Give peace a chance all three singers were great
June 19th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Wow. David Lee Roth is just plain terrible. He makes me sick. Sammy Hagar brought class to the band, he was a REAL MUSICIAN, not a Vegas-act.
People hate Hagar because they were so successful with Sammy. Hey, great that they are now making a lot of money with Dave, good for them. Too bad that Michael Anthony was kicked out of the band……
OH! And very nice of them to show up at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. GREAT way to honor their fans….. hmmmmm

Hey Rockers: The bottom line, DLR made VH! Sammy Hagar took VH to the next level, a Class act! Dave is a goof! But his personality off stage should not take away from the fact that as the original Front Man, no rock band in my life time, 51 years, can even be in the same arena as VH. The ARE the greates Rock Band of all time, period, and Dave, Sammy and even Gary get some credit for that! $93 million on this tour is a dollar figure, NOT a Ticket Sales figure. The first tour with VanHagar sold more tickets over 75 shows, than did this tour over 75 shows. The difference in $$$ this time was as already stated, $2 million gate fee to the band, PLUS ticket sales, plus Shirts, etc……. And whether we are DLR fans, or SH fans, or both, the BIG MONEY would come from a VAN HALEN/VAN HAGAR tour. As I noted on a previous ‘comment’ box, VH Promotions should have an Internet voting gig….The Fans vote for the 12-15 DLR era songs they want to hear Live. The SH fans vote for the 12-15 SH era songs. VH then tours, a WORLD TOUR, with Dave opening, and MICHAEL on bass, Wolfy playing back up,or, teach him to play Key boards, then some sap from Night Ranger would not have to sit back stage in the dark during several songs. Then a brief intermition, Sammy comes out, they play the second half, then they do two encores………Dave with one, Sammy with another, and then both of them on stage to close with Every Body Want some?? IT WOULD SELL, IT WOULd BE A MONSTER TOUR!!!!! And everyone would be happy.

Why do you Hagar fans continually say that Roth can’t sing?
Although Roth doesn’t hit the high notes his voice just sound so much cooler. The fact of the matter is Roth sounds just like Roth when he is on the stage and there is no way to replace him. I like Hagar I have several of his solo albums but he just isn’t the better VH singer.
Roth has the perfect RR voice Hagar has a great singing voice

Whether you are a Sammy fan or a ROTH fan, what I see here is FANS of a legendary band that has had many facets that may or may not be preferred. To even put effort in writing comments on a site like this, shows that Van Halen has very passionate, dedicated fans. I respect all points of view on any Van Halen related topic.
They just didn’t need to charge so much on the ticket price for a “Reunion” Tour that didn’t include all of the founding members. Yes. I went twice and paid in excess of $100 per show, all along wishing Michael Anthony was on stage, not some kid with the stage presence of a 2nd rate amateur.
Either way. It was a PARTY!

Hey cabo joe, why dont you take a pill and relax. Dont you have a job?
Rock on Dave!!! Rock on Sammy!!! drink somemore booze eddie and ruin another chance of new VH music. You all are fools. I have two VH tattoo’s and live and breathe this band, My sons name is HALEN for christ’s sake!!!and all your garbage talk is useless as tits on a bull. Dave cant sing, sammys fat, wolfgang has acne, and alex’s hair looks like a 80 yr old all frizzed out and grey. Do I care? NO! It’s about the music dillweeds. Get over the fact that a ticket was 100 bucks, thanks to the machine and the process of sharing this info with you turds is the reason prices are so high. They cant sell albums and make money. Duhhhh. Go to you tube and watch videos of allthe eras and enjoy this gift we have all been given. These comments are retarted.
Blah blah blah

drop the Hagar stuff and get to the REAL Van Halen with Dave….nobody wants to hear Hagar without montrose

To me the bottom line is both Hagar and Roth will have a place in VH history. They both rocked and there is not a VH album from 78 to 95 that didn’t rock. But any argument over who is a better singer is deaf one. The reason Roth doesn’t sing Van Hagar era tunes is because he can’t. He just doesn’t have the range that Sammy has. As for writers, you have to credit Eddie. As much as I appreciate and like Sammy, you just can’t compare any of his own songs with the VanHagar era songs. I own every album/cd hagar ever put out, (even Montrose Paper Money), but nothing compares to his days with VH. The writing in that era was mastery. and although Sammy does have many great solo songs, all the big ones were either written by somone else or co-written, i.e. I can’t Drive 55, Heavy Letal, One Way to Rock, etc..
I also love the DLR era of VH and grew up with it. Roth did an admirable job on the recent tour, but unfortunately, Eddie has far outgrown Dave musically and any new material will be a sham with Roth Singing. That is why they did not perform a single new song on the tour. Dave can sing the old ones but that’s about it. perhaps even a stretch.
I like the idea of touring with both singers and Mad Anthony, but that ain’t gonna happen. Eddie is too bitter.

Gary Cherone had more class than David Lee Roth had in one of his fingers……which probably have some nasty rash on it anyway.
LONG LIVE GARY, LONG LIVE SAMMY! LONG LIVE VAN HAGAR!!!!!!!!!!

Dave does not sing Hagar era songs because there is no reason for him to. If Dave is on stage, he does HIS songs. Sam is a good performer, an ok writer and a very good singer, but ROTH IS A LEGEND.
The “Why can’t we all just get along” stuff is funny. Ed is not looking to make “everyone happy” he is looking to make the band that he wants to play in right now* (*subject to change)
I for one think we are better off with TWO bands - Ed + Dave and Sam + Mike. The styles fit together better, and the singers don’t have to try to do each other’s tunes.

OKAY, 1st off, VH made DLR, DLR did not make VH!
Sammy Has always written his own songs and they got better when he was challenged by EVH. The two can’t be compared. Are you always compared to your siblings? Your friends? If you are, then you’re not being YOU! Let’s face it, VH would sound like VH no matter who sang. Tiny Tim could’ve sung (R.I.P.)and it would’ve sounded like VH.
If you change the “chemistry” of anything, it’ll be different no matter what it is, that’s just fact.
It’s no better, or worse, just different. VH is, was and will always be VH. All of you “comparer-ers” get over yourself and just enjoy the music created by the
Greatest American Rock’n'Roll Band of All Time, VAN HALEN.
p.s. I have that 1977 SH concert on cassette tape, recorded back in 1979…lucky me!
July 6th, 2008 at 12:51 am
Ok, it’s 2008! I’ve been listening to all this shit for far too long. Sammy-this, Dave-that oh yeah and don’t forget Gary! Look people I happen to like all incarnations of Van Halen. I’ve seen them over 17 times across the USA and they were all good times. Get over whatever bitchin’ you are doing, pop in a CD, cassette or hell even a LP of your favorite frontman and for the love of all that is holy… STFU and leave this alone!
July 8th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
I’ll tell you guys why Roth outsold sammy. Because of the development of the CD. When the CD came out people went and re-bought all the old VH albums. There fore doubling their selling. However Sammy came after the CD was developed. Therefore, Roth got lucky in outselling the Sammy era just because of the developemtn of the CD.
Thanks VHND for giving us Sammy updates all the time.
I’ve seen VH twice in my life and i’m 17. Saw um with Sammy in 2004 then with Roth in 2007.
The Roth concert was not that great. The whole concert I was sitting there hoping Sammy would kick Dave off the stage and get on with the show. Dave DOESNT have it anymore. Hey Dave, the 80’s are over buddy.
July 10th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
All of you guys are killing me with who is always better and you forget all of the music. I for one have been a fan of music as a whole, both Dave and Sammy have drove the music I have listened to all of my life. Both were geniuses in there own right and offered all of us a chance to grow up through the 70-80-90 with great music. Just get over it, I have heard every record / tape and CD they have ever made through the years. And It is some of the best music ever..all the way from solos ventures to 1984 through 5150 times etc. Its not about money or fame or who’s the most screwed up one. Its about that jam you still remember listing to in your car cruising down the road without a care in the world.
