Eddie Van Halen says VH “reunion” is up to David Lee Roth; Wolfgang Van Halen has replaced Michael Anthony after playing bass for only three months

Wednesday, 13 December 2006

vanwolfgang.jpgFrom Blabbermouth.net:

Eddie Van Halen spoke to Guitar World magazine about the current status of VAN HALEN following the departures of vocalist Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony.

Rumors continue to swirl that original singer David Lee Roth, who was replaced by Hagar in the mid-1980s, will return to the fold, despite years of enmity. Roth, who has recently worked as a radio DJ and a paramedic, told Billboard.com in May that he saw it “absolutely as an inevitability.”

“I’m telling Dave, ‘Dude, get your ass up here and sing, bitch! Come on!’” Eddie told Guitar World. “As it stands right now, the ball is in Dave’s court. Whether he wants to rise to the ocassion is entirely up to him, but we’re ready to go.”

I don’t care if Eddie plays with the Wiggles or David Letterman’s house band…as long as EDDIE VAN HALEN is on stage, there will be a seat taken by me. It’s time that the MILLIONS of EVH fans started coming out and speaking up.
If you’re a Van Halen Fan you’re a fan of the music and let’s face it, we all know who wrote the majority of it. We all know the reason they are one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time and indescribably famous and it wasn’t because of Mikey (whom I like). I had the honour of watching Sammy on tour in 2004 and I will make it my mission to see DLR and watch the frontman who put the band on the map in the first place. But when it comes time to chant EDDIE during the guitar solos and the Eruption solioquoy…my voice will be the loudest. Bring it on and bring it on soon but EDDIE…give us some new tunes too.

Hmm… interesting. I’m a huge =vh= fan and have seen them 5 times (with dave and sammy). I think =vh= fans want the real deal, no offense to Wolfgang. I know Wolfgang is talented, I drove from Canada to St. Paul (MN) to see them and got to see Wolfgang perform.

I’ve been a =vh= fan for over 22 years, my son that is being born in January’s name has already been chosen… Halen. Even got the wife’s approval on this one.

  3. tim says:

Eddie is a great guitarist, no doubt. But if VH is all about Eddie then explain why VH 3 didnt work? Eddie is a nut job plain and simple and mark my words this next tour is going to be a mess.

  4. JIMBO says:

VH!! i have been a fan since the frist vh1 and vh2 the 84 tour was the best at buffalo aud. What a show lower golds!! i would like to see the org.band. But it,s getting hard to see any good rock bands anymore so much wimpy music emo crap out there now this will be good to hear and watch some good rock music again please come to hsbc arena in buffalo ny!! thank you guys

  5. Danny says:

Just to see Eddie is enough to pay for that concert ticket, bring Diamond Dave into the picture and its nostalgic! He does get pretty silly at times, forgets lyrics, subs lyrics and changes phrasing, but thats what makes him entertaining! I’m curious to here Wolfgang, but a reunion tour calls for Mike on Bass. In my opinion Wolfgang should play on new songs he’s collabarated on. Or have him play keyboards.

  6. Chris says:

A Van Halen reunion without Michael Anthony, is like a reunion with your third, forth, or fifth ex-wife.
I’m in my thirties. I have been a fan since 1985 in fifth grade. I bought every album and video since. I saw Van Halen live countless times, at many arenas, ampitheatres and parks. I had the priveledge of meeting Van Halen with Gary Cherone at Sam the record man in Toronto Canada when Van Halen III was released. A day I’ll never forget! I asked Ed for a guitar pick thinking of course he would carry one at all times, but instead he gave me a Camel cigarette, which I still cherrish with my other autographs.
I never had the chance to see Roth with Halen as the front man. I have seen many old videos where Roth just stands in front of the thousands and gets a Mammoth response.
I saw Van Halens Best of Both Worlds tour with Sammy a few years ago in Hamilton Ontario Canada. I was arms length from the stage. I saw Eddie throw his guitar over the guitar techs head, right stage, when it malfunctioned at the start of Up for Breakfast. I saw Eddie making comments to Sammy during a few songs, the look Eddie gave to Sammy told me everything. Your solo was about 40 minutes too long! Man, was I ever disappointed.
O.K what’s the point. For years, and years, and years; I wanted to see the original line up, David Lee Roth, Edward, Alex, Van Halen and Michael Anthony. Van Halen best of volume 1 released with Roth on vocals. Some of the coolest licks I heard from Ed in a long time, chills down my spine, bumps on my arms even after hearing it a few times. A standing ovation on the MTV music awards years back - remember? It ended as soon as it began.
Wake up boys, this is what the people want!
Lose the B.S. attitude and remember, why, and how you got there in the first place. An album including the original four, and a tour to back it up! Leave the excessive booze at home.
My son is at the age now, that I was when I heard 5150 for the first time. My son has been exposed to Van Halen, he knows the sound of Van Halen even if he hasn’t heard that song before. He has interrest in the electric guitar, and wants me to teach him. I would like to show him the real VH live experience!

Show the world why you will be remembered as one of the GREATEST bands of ALL TIME. Ed, show the world why you will be remembered as one of the GREATEST guitar players of ALL TIME.
Give me a reason to jump on the band wagon and believe in VH once more!
My Van Halen includes Michael Anthony!
    Surprise me.

  7. PATRICK MOORE says:

IF WE ALL WENT TO OUR JOBS WITH THE STUPID ATTITUDES THAT EDDIE AND DAVE HAVE, WE’D GET FIRED.
PLEASE CUT THE CRAP. YOU STILL HAVE MILLIONS OF FANS WHO
ARE STILL DYING TO SEE YOU AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.(MYSELF INCLUDED.)ISN’T THAT WHAT YOU WANTED?
DAVE AND EDDIE, GROW UP. HOW MANY MORE YEARS DO YOU THINK WE’RE GOING TO WATCH ALL THIS NONSENSE? IF YOU DON’T WANT YOUR JOB, THEN QUIT. WE’RE VERY TIRED OF WATCHING THE NONSENSE.
OTHERWISE, GROW UP, AND LET’S FREAKING ROCK.

  8. Daniel says:

This is not good…they will start the tour and Dave will pull out after the first couple of shows, and Wolfgang really shouldn’t be apart of a reunion, because he is not Michael. Sammy is better to watch than Dave, simply because he has a good attitude.

  9. Brad says:

i am very excited at the possibilty of Dave back in the fold, however it would be a huge let down without Michael Anthony and as much as i love VH you know it would fall apart quickly, why do these guys after basically growing up together let fame go to their heads?? Jagger and Richards fought for years but always put the band first, Eddie needs to grow up and realize Dave’s antics and bigger than life persona are as big a reason as Eddie’s Guitar for making VH one of the all time greaT bands!! Come on Eddie wake up give your head a shake call Mike Anthony quit pouting cause he toured with Sammy and most of all QUIT DRINKING!!!!

  10. panheadnat says:

Eddie is a great guitarist, an ICON… But I’m sorry Van Halen as a touring band is over. It’s time to move on… Solo projects in order here, and that’s where new creativity evolves. I don’t want to see sissy david lee, and I think he is never going to change his ways. How about just an Instumental project, no singers just some mighty ripping going on. Show us how great Wolfe is going to be, do the three man band. Eddie, Alex, and Wolfe… then see where it goes from there. Just my old man opinion.

  11. Jimmy Barham says:

Everyone has valid points here, most I agree with, some I don’t, but that’s ok, there’s nothing wrong with that. I mean, after all, isn’t that why we’re all here posting these comments in the first place? I have already voiced my opinion, a couple of times on this site, and if you click on here where comments are made about, Eddie and Fender, and the Frankenstein reproductions, and where comments are made on here where it says, VH recycled, you can read’em. But one ponit I haven’t made yet, and Josh Groven (the very first comment posted here), man, I agree with you 100%! As long as Eddie Van Halen is playing, my ass will be planted in a seat also! Anyone that has actually convienced themselves, or has let someone else convience them, that EVH is not what puts people in the seats, then ponder this. Let ANY kind of VH line-up go on tour, without Eddie Van Halen, and see how many tickets will sell!!! I don’t give a crap if ya love him (EVH), or hate him, or somewhere in between, it is what it is, even if the truth hurts a little. Without Eddie, (and for me personaly, Alex too), you have no VH. Plain and simple. I’ve already posted this once, but I’ll say it here, again. The Obvious thing to do, is Ed and Al, give Mike a call and ask him to join you guys. Then you have the original 4 members of VH, which everyDAMNbody wants to see, and bring Wolfgang on board as a second guitarist. Can you not see what a great line-up that would be, with Wolfgang and Eddie as dueling guitarist back and forth? Think of what the two of them doing a guitar solo would be like, with Eddie on one side of the stage, and Wolfgang on the far other side. That’s just my opinion, does anyone agree or disagree, or what? Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion, you’re not gonna hurt my feelings, that’s for damn sure. When you’ve been a VH fan since you were, 16 and in HS when their first album was released, and are still just as passionate now at 44, as you were then about VH, trust me, your skin thickens! Like I said, everyone here has valid points, and every single one of us, are entitled to voice their opinions. This just happens to be mine!

  13. Annie says:

VH is the greatest rock band now please act like it and give the fans the moment we have been waiting for at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! I have been a VH fan since 1980 and met my husband online in a VH chat room 11 years ago. Eddie defines VH but Sammy and Michael are an intricate part of the band, history and success, just as Dave and Alex are. My heart will be broken if it turns into the Diamond Dave show at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Sammy and Michael are not included. These guys are 5 adults and should be able to make nice for a couple hours for the millions of fans who have supported them over the last 29 years!

  14. Kenny "LaMar" says:

I’ve been waiting and waiting for this moment when DLR and EV would reunite. Back when the first album came out, I was working at a record store called Peaches Records & Tapes and when the first shipment of Van Halen’s first album hit the stores, I played that album (33Lp, before CDs)so much over the store sound system that I must of sold out every copy that had came in. I was digging the band and Eddie’s guitar playing to death. I came from that aggressive guitar playing school myself (Hendrix, etc.) I new that Eddie’s guitar playing was going to change the way guitar players thought. Much like Hendrix in my younger years. I went out and bought a Kramer with a Floyd Rose locking tremelo. I already had a Marshall 50 watt head and 412 cab and I was in guitar heaven. I think it’s great that Eddie’s son is going to be able to perform with the band, but like alot of us I think Michael should be playing bass just for the sake of the original band being back together again. I hope everyone gets along for the tour and come together and relize it’s about the music and make some magic for us long awaited fans for this reunion.
I just want to wish Eddie and the rest of the members a very happy reuion and if you come up to Seattle I’ll be there in support of Van Halen. Long Live “VH”!!!!!

  15. Cowgirl1 says:

I’m so psyched for the ‘07 tour. It amazes me that we are now of the “Wiggles” crowd. My how we’ve grown up. It’s about time VH takes us back to our glory days. Then we can show our kids what “real” music is.
I don’t care who sings, as long as it’s not that dude from Extreme. (Don’t quit your day job).

  16. Moe says:

Fan-freakin-tastic!!! This is what we’ve all been waiting for! Or at least everyone except Mr. Anthony.

    But that’s ok.
If he wants to sit this one out, that’s fine by me. We love him anyway and he can always come back….unless Wolfie totally kicks ass on tour and doesn’t screw up. What am I saying…he’s a Van Halen!!!

I just hope Dave can suck it up and keep his ego in a can until the tour is over! But I ain’t placing any bets on how long the tour will last. All we can do is hope and pray for the best and wait for the dates to be announced.

Long live Van Halen!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!

  17. roger rich says:

hey if its gonna be dave singing how come we can not get cofirmation from his camp all i have heard is dave has been waiting ,still waiting i can say for sure that dave is not the man.its gonna be sammy, sammy and eddie matured the band .moved them to the next level!together with sammy they hvae out sold anything they ever did with dave who has gone country, quite a feat eh?sammy going on 60 still rockin and vanhalen, bros. still rockin why would they want to go country?dave will only sing with the band at the rock induction.

  18. Sheryl Roberts says:

It will be my dream come true to see a VanHalen concert especially with Dave singing. Dave has charisma and knows how to reach out to the crowd. I saw him at the Worcester Centrum on his “Eat-em and Smile” tour. It was the greatest concert I have ever seen! To finally see VH with Dave singing would be awesome! Yeah Dave has a rep of being arrogant and “in your face”, but aren’t some of the greatest singers that way? I wish Mike was going to be included on the tour, but from what I hear, Wolfgang is rocking on bass. If he has even half of his father’s talent he must awesome. When I was a teen I blared my VH records (I still have them). I hope to have a chance to finally see a VH concert. I think Dave and Eddie can make this tour happen for the good of the people. It’s like riding a bike and they sure know how to RIDE! Guys, get it together and PLEASE come to Boston! Don’t let your millions of die hard VH fans down! We love you! Don’t let me down!!!

  19. joe says:

what a waste of time and space!we all know dave can’t get past his ego,and eddie can’t leave the booze alone to tour together. mike doesn’t want to tour because of all the hassle.it would be great to see a reunion, but face it folks,it’s never going to happen.
